Come along for a ride

Thank you for your interest in Velo Club Bridgford; we are a not for profit, British Cycling affiliated club, open to all.  We attempt to cater for road cyclists of all abilities, with regular rides throughout the week and a range of member benefits.

Get in touch to come out with us for a few weeks to get to know some of the members, see what level you are comfortable at, and enjoy the rides.

After a month you will be expected to join the Club if you want to continue.

Please contact our Membership Secretary for the account details to pay the membership fee and receive your welcome pack.  Membership will last until 30th September each year and costs £10.

The Club activities are organised through our Facebook pages – the club forum (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1666572013564554/) and the Rides & Events page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1473759129585607/).  You will be given access to these pages on payment of your membership fee.

In addition to getting in on the many rides going out each week, and the various sportives and cycling events our members get together for, we arrange to benefit our members whole club and cycling experience.

  • Discounted British Cycling membership for new members of BC (first year only).
  • Access to basic maintenance courses.
  • Various discounts with local bike shops – Cycle Garage in West Bridgford, Leisure Lakes in Breaston, Creation Cycles in Radcliffe, and we’re working on more!
  • Cycling Time Trials (CTT) affiliation to partake in official time trials, hill climbing and other similar events.
  • Group Velodrome activities – work toward your track accreditation so you can join other members on structured training sessions, compete in the track-league races, or just go to experience it!
  • Social events through the year.
  • Ride with a great bunch of like-minded people.
  • Be able to purchase our high-quality club kit.
  • Keep your eyes peeled, there will be more – and feel free to make suggestions of what you’d like to see us offering too, it’s your club!  We can’t promise everything, but will try wherever possible.

All rides conform to our ride etiquette .  Most rides are no-drop – we ride to the slowest person in the group and return together – unless specifically stated in the ride description.  We always help those looking to step-up a group and push their limits so that we keep the rides balanced for those that are comfortable at the published speeds.  Get in touch if you want to try riding with us (the regular times and details are on the members facebook page to coordinate on a day-to-day basis and get an idea of numbers for booking that all-important café stop!)

  • Wolf Cubs: beginners ride, paced to the lowest ability in that ride – builds fitness, skills and confidence.
  • Novice: stepping up to riding as a tighter, disciplined group, with Novice plus increasing the pace a little.
  • Progressive: working together as a ride to go a bit further and quicker, and introducing more hills. Typically 14-16mph.
  • Inters: endurance and climbing rides, 16-18mph
  • Veloce: faster rides 18mph+

Inspiring women to ride for fun and fitness, Breeze is the largest ever programme to get more women riding bikes in the UK.  Led by women for women, Breeze relies on Breeze Champions (volunteer ride leaders, of whom there are several in VCB), to support other women on guided bike rides across the UK.  Breeze empowers women to change the face of cycling for good and leave a lasting legacy in their area by a network of free bike rides, friendly support, and great people to ride with.

If this appeals as a way to build confidence up to club riding, or in its own right, we can help you get started.

We maintain Club membership of the Cycling Time Trials association so that members can ride in Time Trials (TTs).  Some ride in the ‘Evening 10’ local event series run by Nottingham Clarion.

While most routes are posted as Strava or Garmin Connect files on the Rides & Events page (Members only), we are building a repository of quality-checked route files using a Ride With GPS group.

Mission Statement:

VCB provides a supportive environment for all to enjoy the benefits of cycling.

We shall work with other organisations, and lead where appropriate, to provide a pathway toward every member’s aspired ability level, and to encourage development such that everyone can enjoy riding together as proud representatives of a social community of shared interest.

We inspire and support each other.
We are inclusive, and not bound by ability, geographic area or demographics.
We are primarily focused on riding on-road, but recognise that some like to ride over more testing terrain or, indeed, indoors.

Maintain a visible identity that advertises our Club and its purpose and engenders a sense of belonging, accepting that such visibility requires responsibility in how we are perceived and a code of conduct to maintain a good name and support our objectives.
The ongoing promotion of Safety & Rider Education to set a code of cycling etiquette that looks after each other’s safety on a ride, sets the highest standard for interacting with other road users, and secures the Club reputation.
Be a welcoming and inclusive face of cycle sport that offers progression from any starting level to a range of club rides, and maintains links to other organisations for those wishing to progress further with fitness, development, coaching, event support, ambassador, or racing opportunities.
Provide an annual programme of Events that are structured and layered across Members’ ability levels to offer ongoing interest, as well as headline events offering targets for the year or ‘all club’ engagement.
An active and regular social calendar that encourages effort and celebrates success, deepens the cohesion of the club, and supports injured riders.

The Club’s Mission Statement, Vision, Ethos and Objectives provide a framework within our Constitution, against which concepts, investment projects, and the performance of Club activities can be assessed, to ensure that the Committee serve the best interests of the Club and Membership during their tenure. This strategy shall be put before the Membership at each AGM as the basis for the Committee’s report, and be ratified or updated by their successors.

Please message us through Facebook, or email the Club if you want to get in touch or find out about our rides.

There are two Facebook pages for the Club, one for general discussion and another that is limited to details of the rides and events (start times, routes, café stops, numbers attending and such); both are for members only and access is given on joining the club – trial members will be looked after by a ride leader.

You can also find the Club on Instagram and Twitter.

VCB is a British Cycling affiliated club, and though our members are not required to join them we do get a discount on the first year’s membership.
BC membership has a range of benefits with packages that include liability insurance and a range of discounts on travel or bike insurance as well as offers from retailers.  It is a must for access to some events and for race licences if you intend to compete, but also offers a range of ways to get involved in cycling for non-members or those not looking for club activity.

VCB are on Strava, obvs.
Associated with British Cycling, Breeze, and Cycling Time Trials, our members are frequently seen at Derby Velodrome, and we have links with other local clubs such as Nottingham Clarion and Vale of Belvoir CC
